Former US president Jimmy Carter today met the leaders of Hamas in Cairo. He met the delegation at a Cairo hotel under tight security amidst criticism from the US and Israel.

The Hamas members included Mahmud Zahar and Said Siam. Zahar had earlier hailed the talks, saying that Hamas was determined to meet with Carter. Carter also met Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. He will continue his regional tour to Damascus where he is due to meet exiled Hamas political chief Khaled Meshaal.

The former US president, who is credited with brokering the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace deal, came under criticism from US presidential hopefuls, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.

"Hamas is not a state, Hamas is a terrorist organization," Obama said.
