The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC)'s executive chairman Tomaz Augusto Salomao announced Sunday that Thabo Mbeki is mandated choice of mediator in the Zimbabwe crisis. The move comes in response to calls made by Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai for Mbeki to be "relieved of duty" in his role as mediator.

Mbeki with SADC leaders on the sidelines of Sunday's meeting on reducing poverty, to report on developments in Zimbabwe.

At a meeting of the SADC in Mauritius Sunday, Salomao underlined that Mbeki is the regional bloc's mandated choice of mediator in the Zimbabwe crisis.
