Pakistan Muslim League Party-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif said Monday that government ministers from his party would resign from their posts in protest over a missed deadline for the reinstatement of judges fired by President Pervez Musharraf. Nine PML-N ministers currently hold office in the coalition.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif says the protest by his party members would not destabilise the government. President Pervez Musharraf sacked 60 judges during emergency rule in November. PML-N has called for their reinstatement ever since.

Sharif's party met after holding negotiations in London with Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). The parties could not come to an agreement over reinstating the judges. But the PML-N left the meeting with a deadline of May 12 - today - to reinstate the judges.

In related news, the Commonwealth lifted its suspension of Pakistan after the November emergency measures taken by Musharraf, but said that the country needs to reinforce the independence of the judiciary.
