Celebrities and politicians turned out for the funeral of fashion designer Yves St Laurent in Paris today. Film star Catherine Deneuve and President Nicolas Sarkozy with his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy were among the 800 mourners.

Hundreds of onlookers followed the funeral on a giant screen outside the Saint Roch church. They applauded when the coffin was brought in.

St Laurent dominated international couture from the 1960s until his 2002 retirement. He died on Sunday, aged 71, in his Paris home of a brain tumour.

Also among the mourners were Socialist Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë and St Laurent's business partner and lover Pierre Bergé.

Most of the women attending the funeral were in trouser-suits as a tribute to St Laurent's innovations early in his career.
