Spaniard Alejandro Valdeverde, riding for the Caisse d'Epargne, won the first stage of the Tour de France on Saturday. The joint favourite to win the whole race came through on a sprint ahead of Belgian Philippe Gilbert, Frenchman Jerome Pineau and Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg.
Valdeverde pulled on the yellow jersey at the end of a ride over

197.5 kilometers of undulating terrain.

For the first time since 1967 the world's biggest race did not kick off with a time trial prologue. The organisers want to get the race going as quickly possible.

Radio France Internationale will be reporting on the Tour as it makes its gruelling progress across the country.
