24 killed in suicide bombing

A suicide attack in southern Afghanistan on Sunday killed 24 people. The US-led coalition also said on Sunday that it had killed 40 militants in fighting in the province of Helmand.

The blast took place in southern Afghanistan on Sunday. Police said 24 people were killed and more than two dozen wounded when a motorbike loaded with explosives was driven into a police vehicle. The attack took place 400 kilometers south-west of Kabul in Deh Rawood.

There were 20 civilians and four policemen among the victims of the attack. No responsibility has been claimed for the attack; Afghan President Hamid Karzai said it had been carried out by "the enemies of Afghanistan".

Also on Sunday the US-led coalition in Afghanistan said that it killed 40 militants in the southern province of Helmand. This after fighting broke out on Saturday when militants ambushed an Afghan and international security patrol in the Sangin district.
