Radio France Internationale’s Niger correspondent, Moussa Kaka, has been in prison since September 2007. He could receive a life sentence for being in contact with Tuareg rebels - a necessary part of his work as a journalist.

Moussa Kaka has worked with RFI since 1993. He started work as a journalist in the written press, writing his first articles for the Niger newspaper, Le Républicain.

As well as being RFI’s correspondent in Niger, he is the director of a private radio station, Saraounia, one of the country’s most important FM broadcasters.

Moussa Kaka was detained for questioning on Friday 19 September, 2007.

A week later he was charged with “complicity in undermining the authority of the state”.

Early July 2008 a senior judge ruled that Moussa Kaka had no case to answer and ordered the charges dropped. But state prosecutors have lodged an appeal against his release.

Amnesty International considers him a political prisoner.
