The Republican party vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, received a prank call from a Canadian comedian claiming to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Believing she was on the line with the French head of state she discussed Republican chances in the current campaign, President Sarkozy's "beautiful family" and the possibility of going hunting with the would-be French President.

"We have such great respect for you, John McCain and I, we love you", Palin said.

The comedian told her "I follow your campaign closely with my special American Advisor Johnny Hallyday" referring to the French rock star and claimed that "From my house I can see Belgium".

"Maybe in eight years" she responded to the suggestion that she might run for President herself.

Asked about criticism that suggested she lacked experience she responded, "When you come into a position underestimated it gives you an opportunity to prove the pundits and the critics wrong".

Once the joke had been revealed, the McCain campaign released a statement saying that Governor Palin "was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state (...) in being targeted by these pranksters. C'est la vie."
