A car bomb attack in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday killed four Afghan civilians. The car exploded about 100 metres from the embassy entrance in rush-hour traffic.

The embassy was shut for Thanksgiving celebrations and an embassy spokesperson said that all staff were accounted for.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Taliban militants. A spokesperson for the group said the explosion was aimed at nearby soldiers. Both the US and the Nato-led coalition force said they were not aware of their troops having been in the area.

Thursday's attacks follows an attack on the Indian embassy earlier this year which killed 60 people.

In the south of the country in Uruzgan province on Thursday, a foot patrol of Nato-coalition soldiers was hit by a bomb. One Australian soldier died in the attack.
