For decades, the Centre for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution has released up to 20 new recordings a year which promote modern grassroots culture throughout the world. Atesh Sonneborn, the centre’s assistant director discusses the philosophy behind his choices and the evolution of the collection. One example of the artists his centre could soon promote is West Indian ukulele player Kali. World Tracks talks to the veteran artist as he brings out one of his best albums to date, Caribbean Roots, volume 5.
