A Turkish Airlines passenger flight crashed on Wednesday morning while trying to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, leaving nine dead and more than 50 injured, 25 of them seriously.

The plane came down short of the runway at Schiphol, which is in the Haarlemmermeer municipality, at 10.31 UT. It had taken off from Istanbul at 6.22 UT.

There were 78 Turkish nationals and 56 foreigners on board the Boeing 737-800. The nine dead include some crew members, according to Candan Karlitekin, Chief Executive of Turkish Airlines.

The aircraft came down about a kilometre away from the airport and broke up.

Passengers who had been on board said it was a matter of seconds between the first sign of trouble and the crash.

Schiphol is Europe's fifth-busiest airport, with 48 million passengers coming through the airport in 2007.
