Nearly 40 killed in Mogadishu, mosque hit

A mortar shell hit a mosque in Mogadishu on Sunday, with witnesses reporting 14 civilians dead and about ten more wounded. That brings the reported death toll in renewed fighting in the Somali capital to 39.

Before the mosque blast, 21 people were reported to have died in clashes between Islamist fighters who back the government and members of the Hizb Al-Islamiya movement.

Dozens of  others have been wounded, with one hospital reporting that about 80 injured civilians have been admitted.

The fighting is the heaviest in the city for weeks. It blew up when pro-government forces and Hizb Al-Islamiya over a police station late Saturday.

Hardline Islamist militias have intensified attcks on government targets in the Somali capital over the past few days.
