Pakistan's six-week long offensive against the Taliban continued on Thursday, with the army battling militants in known Al-Qaeda hideouts. It claims it has killed more than 1,440 fighters since the beginning of the assault.

The Pakistani military said "34 terrorists were killed while they were apprehended" in Bannu district, close to the Waziristan region.

Another 22 suspected Taliban fighters were killed in the semi-autonomous province of South Waziristan. Rumours that the army will soon launch a full scale offensive in the region are growing.

Under constant pressure from the US government, Pakistan is intensifying its campaign against Al-Qaeda in the lawless tribal regions. Some Pakistanis, however, fear the rebels' retribution.

The latest Taliban attacks have been deadly. One person was killed and 35 were injured by a bomb that exploded in a train in the Baluchistan province on Thursday morning, and nine people were killed by a suicide bomber in a hotel in Peshawar, the capital, last Tuesday.
