After 200,000 people turned up to watch India's armed forces march down the Champs-Elysées on France's Bastille Day, 14 July, 700,000 gathered close to the Eiffel Tower for the traditional fireworks in the evening.
Thousands of fireworks marked the 120th birthday of the tower itself and French rocker Johnny Hallyday opened proceedings with a free concert on the Champs-de-Mars.

Hallyday's appearance was part of what is being described as his last-ever tour.

A record number of police, 10,000, were on the streets in Paris to ensure everyone behaved themselves and that Johnny's car hadn't been torched when he got off stage, after around 500 cars were set alight around the country on the eve of the 14th.
