Two people have died during preparations for a concert by Madonna in the southern French city of Marseille. The deaths were caused by an accident during the construction of the stage at the city's Vélodrome stadium.

Hospital officials report a second death Friday following the collapse of a stage being built for the Madonna concert.

Charles Prow, a British technician, had been in intensive care in a neurosurgery ward in the city but died of his injuries overnight.

Another man, 53-year-old Charles Criscenzo, was killed outright during the accident, as the roof of the stage being constructed fell in.

Eight other people were injured, including an American who was hospitalised in a life-threatening condition. More than 30 people suffered minor injuries and shock.

Madonna said that she was “devastated” by the news. She cancelled her scheduled performance in Marseille after the accident.
