Iran's top nuclear negotiatior said the Islamic Republic had prepared a new package of proposals linked to its atomic programme. Saeed Jalili, who also heads Iran's Supreme National Security Council, added that the package is directed at the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

The announcement came amid mounting pressure for a new round of tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear plans.

On Wednesday, there will be a meeting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, China, the US, UK and France) plus Germany to look into harsher UN sanctions against Iran.

On Monday, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned of further sanctions if Iran failed to negotiate with world powers.

No specific details of the new proposals have been given, but Jalili says it will take into consideration last year's global developments including the economic recession and the Georgian crisis.

In April, president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his government would offer world powers an updated version of a one-year old proposal for talks about its nuclear programme.
