Protesters and police clashed in Uganda's capital, Kampala, on Friday after demonstrations the day before which left five dead. According to residents and authorities the city centre was empty following the riots.

Police, supported by the military, fired tear gas and live rounds in an area on the edge of the city, a day after five died in protests against the visit of a traditional ruler.

A spokesperson for the police said three died in Kampala, one in the eastern suburb of Mukuno and one in the western suburb of Mityana on Thursday.

The demonstrations were provoked by a government decision to try and stop the visit of Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, ruler of the Baganda tribe.

Baganda MPs walked out of parliament on Wednesday, while a radio station owned by the Baganda kingdom was shut down by the government on Thursday.

President Yoweri Museveni, from the Ankole kingdom, ordered CBS radio to stop broadcasting because of fears that it was being used as a vehicle to mobilise members of the Baganda tribe.

Mutebi is expected to visit Kayunga on Saturday.
