Despite her owner’s best efforts, the world’s oldest sheep has died in the record breaking heatwave that hit the south-east of Australia.

Lucky, who was 23 years and nearly seven months old was recognised by the Guinness World Records as being the world’s oldest sheep in 2007.

She has been described as a celebrity in her hometown of Lake Bolac, west of Melbourne.

The Polwarth-Dorchester cross, whoa was hand-raised from birth, had reached almost twice the normal life expectancy of a typical sheep.

She will be buried beneath her favourite nectarine tree.
