At least eight people have died and 40 have been wounded by a suicide attack in Kabul on Tuesday. The explosion occurred near a foreign guest house at around 6:00 GMT.

“Eight people have been killed," Interior Ministry spokesman Zamarai Bashary told the AFP news agency. "It was a suicide bombing.”

Sixteen wounded - men, women and children - were taken to a military hospital, while four others are being treated at a civilian hospital.

The explosion happened in Wazir Akbar Khan, a district with a number of embassies, non-governmental organisations and where many Afghan officials reside.

President Hamid Karzai said, “There was an explosion in Wazir Akbar Khan near a foreign guest house, which was also close to my former First Vice President’s house. Two of his bodyguards have been martyred.”
