Guinea’s junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara and current interim leader General Sekouba Konaté met Burkina Faso’s President Blaise Compaoré in Ouagadougou on Thursday, leading to speculation that the injured military leader may return to Conakry.

An official in the presidency said the three men met at the presidential palace without their aids. Camara has been in Burkina Faso since Tuesday, following a month in a Moroccan hospital to treat injuries sustained when he was shot in the head by his aide-de-camp last December.

Compaoré has been mediating in the political crisis in Guinea began in December 2008. September’s massacre of more than 150 people by junta troops as they attended an opposition rally, plunged the country into an even deeper crisis.

A UN report on the stadium massacre in Conakry names Camara as a suspect as it accuses his troops of “crimes against humanity”. The possibility of Camara returning to Conakry has raised concerns in the country as well as in France and the United States.
