Presidents, prime ministers, even kings of 43 countries gathered around a table Sunday here in the lofty glass-domed Grand Palais in Paris for the launch of the Union for the Mediterranean, the brainchild of French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

"At last Europe has understood the importance of the Mediterranean," declared triumphant local politicians in Marseilles after France's second city was selected as European Capital of Culture for 2013. It was against the odds, but President Boris Tadic's Democratic Party (DS) and partners won the weekend's general election. early results give the 'For a European Serbia" alliance 39 per cent. Supporters of the alliance celebrated in Belgrade on Sunday, but the results have yet to be confirmed.

Voting on whether or not to join the EU

More than 6.7 million Serbs are voting in snap general elections this Sunday to chose between parties that either want to enter or rebuff the European Union. The nationalist Serbian Radical Party is running neck-and-neck with a pro-European alliance spearheaded by President Boris Tadic. Opinion polls give each about one third of the vote.
