Protests greet Sarkozy in Dublin

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was in Dublin on Monday to meet with the Irish government and opponents of the Lisbon Treaty. His visit comes in the wake of the Irish referendum which rejected the treaty in June. Despite reports last week that Sarkozy had suggested that the Irish vote again, Irish Taoiseach (PM) Brian Cowen said the French leader had confirmed his respect for the result of the Irish vote.

Sarkozy promises solution to treaty crisis by year end

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has promised a solution to the  crisis over the EU's Lisbon treaty by December, at the latest. In his first speech to the EU parliament since France took over the rotating presidency, Sarkozy promised to visit Ireland, which rejected the treaty in a referendum, later this month.

Lisbon treaty decision pushed back to October

EU leaders will postpone a final decision on the fate of the Lisbon treaty to the next EU summit in October, according to a draft statement released Friday dueing a summit in Brussels. After Irish voters rejected the treaty, its future remains in doubt, as legally it must be endorsed by all member-states.

Irish vote 'no' on European Union treaty

Ireland has vetoed the European Union's new governing treaty, dealing a blow to efforts to forge a more united Europe. Voters rejected the Lisbon treaty by 53.4 percent to 46.6 percent, putting end to an agreement that required ratification by all 27 EU countries.
