The powerful Guardian Council in Iran officially certified the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday, setting off small, scattered protests in the capital, which were quickly quelled by security forces.

Five British embassy staff freed

Iran has released five of nine British embassy staff who were arrested this weekend. The staff, who are Iranian nationals, were accused of fuelling post-election unrest. Ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi made the announcement at a press conference and said the remaining four are still being questioned.

British embassy staff arrested

Although Tehran was calm on Sunday, Iranian media reported that eight workers at the British embassy had been arrested, saying they had "had a considerable role in the recent riots". This follows several other expulsions by Iran and comes as Iran has warned that it may downgrade ties with Britain.
