Protests in Tehran as Ahmadinejad sworn in for second term

Iran's Ahmadinejad tells judges to free protesters

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the judicial chief on Tuesday to free the detained election protesters who are not facing serious charges.

Ahmadinejad confirmed as President

The powerful Guardian Council in Iran officially certified the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday, setting off small, scattered protests in the capital, which were quickly quelled by security forces.

Five British embassy staff freed

Iran has released five of nine British embassy staff who were arrested this weekend. The staff, who are Iranian nationals, were accused of fuelling post-election unrest. Ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi made the announcement at a press conference and said the remaining four are still being questioned.

British embassy staff arrested

Although Tehran was calm on Sunday, Iranian media reported that eight workers at the British embassy had been arrested, saying they had "had a considerable role in the recent riots". This follows several other expulsions by Iran and comes as Iran has warned that it may downgrade ties with Britain.

Gates fires nuclear warning to Iran

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates held talks with Jordan's King Abdullah on Monday amid a push by Washington to revive Middle East peacemaking. Gates, who arrived in Jordan from Israel, joins US Middle East envoy George Mitchell and US National Security Advisor James Jones in the region this week.

Iran lashes out at foreign “interference”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad criticised US President Barack Obama, admonishing him for “interfering” in Iranian internal affairs. Meanwhile, Sweden’s ambassador in Tehran was summoned to explain how Swedish security allowed protestors to enter the Iranian embassy in Stockholm and attack an employee.

Memorial ceremony called off amid clampdown

A mourning ceremony for protesters killed in Iran's post-election demonstrations was called off on Thursday. The political opposition had planned to hold country-wide memorial rallies, but the authorities have clamped down.

Khamenei rejects dissent, diplomatic ties under threat

As diplomatic relations worsened between Iran and several European countries, the country's Supreme Leader said on Wednesday that there would be no backing down in the face of what he called "force". The arrest of 25 people from the newspaper of the losing presidential candidate was also announced on Wednesday.
