The first of the year was marked by one of the most gruesome massacres in Kenya’s history, as over 50 Kikuyu parishioners were burnt alive in a church outside the restive Rift Valley town of Eldoret. Nairobi’s Kibera slum, the western towns of Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru and Naivasha were all the scene of pogroms and ethnic cleansing. This cycle of killing was to continue for more than two months.
