On Monday there were silver medals for France in the men's 4 x 100 freestyle. The swimming pool saw world records fall for the individual 100m freestyle and for the 4 x 100m swimming relay.

There were more medals for the host nation on Monday when the Chinese duo of Lin Yue and Huo Liang took gold in the men's 10m synchronised diving competition. The Germans, Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein took silver with a Russian pairing of Gleb Galperin and Dmitry Dobroskok in third place.

There was a world record for the Australian Eamon Sullivan in the pool when he covered the first leg of the men's 4 x 100m freestyle in 47.24 seconds. The race was won by the US team and they broke the record for the event in the process. France's team took silver with Australia in third place.

In the women's event Holland took gold, the United States took silver and Australia picked up another bronze medal.

The United Kingdom dominated the women's 400m freestyle event when Rebecca Adlington claimed the gold medal and her compatriot Joanne Jackson took bronze. The Kathryn Hoff finished second.

In the men's event China's Zhang Lin was beaten into second by the Korean Taehwan Park. Larsen Jensen of the US was third.

Italy dominated the women's Fencing Foil competition with Maria Valentina Vezzali and Marghertia Granbassi taking the gold and bronze medals respectively. They were separated by the Korean Hyunhee Nam.

On the judo mat Italy took another gold when Giulia Quintavalle won the women's 57kg competition. She was followed by Deborah van der Veken-Gravenstijn of Holland, Ketleyn Quadros of Brazil and Yan Xu of China.

The men's 73kg judo medal went to Elnur Mammadli of Azerbaijan. The Korean Kichun Wang took silver and Leandro Guilheiro of Brazil and Rasul Boqiev of Tajikstan followed.
