My personal gold, silver and bronze awards

Who gets my gold silver and bronze? This is the crucial issue emerging from the 29th Olympiad. Awards given for performance on and off the track or in and out of the water, including sportsmanship, charm and a good line in nuggets stories.

US relay teams take gold, Australian diver scores perfect tens

In the last of the track and field competitions, the US 4 x 400m relay team managed to hold on the baton in both the men's and women's events. In diving, the 10m platform gold went to Matthew Mitcham when he pulled off a difficult final dive - a back two and a half somersault with two and a half twists. Four judges deemed it worthy of a perfect ten.

Another gold for Bolt, another world record

The Jamaican men took gold and records in the 4 x 100m relay while the women did more than enough to win - and then dropped the baton. Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba added the 5,000 women's title to the 10,000 she'd already won.

Jamaica completes sweep of sprints

Jamaica became the first country in 20 years to sweep the 100 and 200 metre sprints in both the men's and women's categories Thursday when Veronica Campbell-Brown took the 200m gold. The US last accomplished the feat in 1988.

3000m steeplechase: France's Mekhissi-Benabbad separates Kenyan gold and bronze

There were more medals for Kenya on Monday in the women's 800m and the men's 3000m steeplechase. Kenya's 18-year-old Pamela Jelimo claimed Kenya's first woman's track Olympic gold.

Africans sweep 10,000m; Jamaican women take 100m

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia took the men's 10,000m gold, just ahead of his countryman Sileshi Sihine. Earlier in the day, three Jamaican women, Shelly-Ann Frazer, Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson swept the podium in the women's 100m final.

Phelps by a feather, Bolt by a mile

American Swimmer Michael Phelps won his 7th gold medal by 0.01 seconds, while Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt wins 100 metre gold by 0.2 seconds.

Asian swimmers make a splash

Japan's breaststroke master Kosuka Kitajima sliced through the water in his second Olympics, earning an unprecedented two golds: one for 200m breaststroke on Thursday, and one for the 100m breaststroke last Monday.

Six world swimming records broken

Six world records were broken in Beijing's Water Cube on Wednesday. US swimmer Michael Phelps stunned crowds yet again on Wednesday when he won two gold medals in the space of an hour, getting closer to his personal goal to win eight golds in Beijing.

Phelps takes third gold medal

Michael Phelps won the ninth Olympic title of his career on Tuesday when he took the 200m freestyle. He broke the world record - his third record at these Games, after three races.

On Monday there were silver medals for France in the men's 4 x 100 freestyle. The swimming pool saw world records fall for the individual 100m freestyle and for the 4 x 100m swimming relay.

Africa wins its first medal, Phelps as well

Kristy Coventry from Zimbabwe became the first African to win a medal at the Beijing games, taking silver in the 4x100 metres womens freestyle relay. She came just 0.44 seconds behind Australia’s Katie Price, who set a new world record.

A big opening day for China

China took an early lead in the overall medal standings despite several favourites cracking under the home crowd pressure. The country has set itself a goal of winning the overall medal count - a feat it has never accomplished before.

Spectacular opening to Beijing Games

The 2008 Olympic Games kicked off with a grand spectacle of lights and a cast of thousands at the "Bird's Nest" stadium at 8 pm local Chinese time. After the initial fireworks, dancers performed a dramatisation of China's history for the packed-to-capacity audience.
