Dalai Lama tells senators Beijing breaks Olympic "truce"

The Dalai Lama has accused China of "breaking the Olympic truce" in Tibet, according to French parliamentarians who attended a private meeting with the Tibetan Buddhist leader at the French Senate on Wednesday. The meeting is the only political event during a 12-day visit to France which came straight after President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to the opening of the Olympic Games.

American tourist killed in Beijing attack

Despite a strong security presence, the Beijing Olympics have suffered their first casualty. A Chinese man attacked an American couple and their tourist guide with a knife, killing one of them as they were visiting the historic Drum Tower monument, a tourist site in the centre of Beijing Saturday morning.
