The track and field got down to business with the men's shot putt and the women's 10,000m final. Tomasz Majewski took the shot putt gold and Tirush Dibaba broke the Olympic record to win the 10,0000.

Ethiopia's 22-year-old Tirunesh Dibaba followed the leaders until the last lap. She then outkicked Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse and never looked like losing. She clocked the second-fastest time of all time and an Olympic record at 29' 54.66. The American Shalane Flanagan took bronze almost thirty seconds behind the winner.

The other half a dozen African athletes were run out of it and the Kenyan-born Lornah Kiplagat, despite leading much of the race from the front, was out of contention when the pace picked up.

Dibaba will be tackling the 5000m in a few days time - in an attempt to pull off the women's distance double.
