End of 2011 – all US troops are to be out of Iraq

August 2010 – US combat mission in Iraq to end

30 June 2009 – withdrawal of US troops from Iraqi cities

31 March 2009 – British hand over their Basra base to the US, ending combat operations in southern Iraq, bumping up a 31 July deadline. The majority of troops leave by the end of May.

1 January 2009 – US hands over Green Zone security to Iraqi forces

27 November 2008 – Iraqi parliament approves an agreement with the US to have US troops out of the country by the end of 2011

1 June 2008 – Australia starts pulling out troops from Iraq, ending combat operations there

September 2006 – postponement of US transfer of command to new Iraqi army

30 January 2005 – elections for Iraqi Transitional National Assembly

30 June 2004 – Prime Minister Iyad Allawi takes over from US as interim Prime Minister
