August 2010 – US combat mission in Iraq to end

30 June 2009withdrawal of US troops from Iraqi cities

31 March 2009British hand over their Basra base to the US, ending combat operations in southern Iraq, bumping up a 31 July deadline. The majority of troops leave by the end of May.

1 January 2009 US hands over Green Zone security to Iraqi forces

27 November 2008 – Iraqi parliament approves an agreement with the US to have US troops out of the country by the end of 2011

1 June 2008 – Australia starts pulling out troops from Iraq, ending combat operations there

September 2006 – postponement of US transfer of command to new Iraqi army
