Mark Cavendish's win on Wednesday's stage 11 from Vatan to Saint-Fargeau, leaves him in a record-equalling position. He has now won four stages in this year's tour, equalling his tally on last year's tour.

The record for stage wins is held by English rider Barry Hoban, who was first across the line on eight occasions in the 1960s and 1970s.

Cavendish pulled away in the last 150 metres and only the American Tyler Farrar was able to stay with him at that point. He finished half a bike-lenth behind Cavendish.

Marcin Sapa and Johan Vansummeren got away after 24 kilometres, but they only built up a 4' 35" advantage before they were hauled back in and caught with only five kilometres to go.
