Denmark's Nicki Soerensen of the Saxo Bank team won the 12th stage of the Tour de France after maintaining an impressive breakaway. It is the first time the 34 year-old has ever won a stage tour in ten years as a professional cyclist.

Soerensen won the stage in four hours and 24 seconds.

Italian Rinaldo Nocentini of AG2R retaining the leader's yellow jersey on the 21-stage Tour with a six and eight second lead respectively on race favourites Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong of Astana.
