Police in Iran clashed with protesters on Saturday and arrested several people who were demonstrating against the government, according to an AFP news agency correspondent. Police tried to disperse up to 300 people who were gathering in Enghelab square in the capital Tehran.

People also gathered in the city's university and hundreds of riot police were deployed along Enghelab street where protesters were expected to march.

Sunday is the last day of the Shiite Islam Ashura ceremonies, which commemorate the death of one of Shiite Islam's most revered figures, Imam Hussein, in 680 AD.

Iran's police chief, Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam had warned against using the processions that are part of the cermonies to launch protests against President Ahmadinejad's government. "Police will severley crack down on rioters", he said according to the Isna news agency.
