MIDEM 2005

Backstage at the International Record Industry Fair

12/04/2006 -

So, what's cooking on the backburners of the music industry right now? The 39th edition of Midem, the international record industry fair held in Cannes, in the south of France (22 - 27 January), is designed to shed some light on the issue. RFI Musique is on hand in Cannes this week, reporting on Midem's musical line-up and taking a look at the latest developments in the record industry. Read on for articles on everything from paying downloads to French records currently enjoying export success.

Midem is traditionally the place where record companies, producers, agents, tour promoters, distributors, broadcasters and independent labels come together to buy and sell concerts, exchange demo tapes and present their hottest up-and-coming new acts. It's also the place where a professional audience get invited to sets by the likes of Diana Ross, Isaac Hayes, Jimmy Cliff, Céline Dion, Vanessa Paradis and Youssou N'Dour.

In recent years, the international record industry has undergone widespread changes thanks to the latest developments in technology. Methods of producing and listening to – or rather 'consuming' – music have changed radically since the digital revolution. And the major players of today are the representatives of these new technologies, the software manufacturers, mobile phone operators, on-line music purveyors – and, of course, the Internet pirates accused of precipitating the current slump in the record industry.

From an artistic point of view, Midem 2005 may not be the most innovative event of the year. Other more specialised music fairs (such as Womex for world music and the Amsterdam Dance Event for electronica) give a much greater insight into emerging trends. But Midem has become an unmissable slot in the annual music calendar nevertheless. And, who knows, maybe the next big music discovery will happen via a downloadable ringtone?
