France took over the presidency of the European Union on 1 July 2008. It will have to handle the aftermath of Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty. And Paris has named a number of priorities that it wants to address over the next six months - starting with immigration and the creation a Union for the Mediterranean.
