With world oil prices soaring, more and more countries are turning to nuclear power as a source of energy. Currently, nuclear power produces 16 per cent of the world’s electricity, but that figure could double in the next 30 years. The world’s biggest nuclear power producer, France, has already successfully exported its technological expertise, and is now looking to build more nuclear reactors in Africa and the Middle East. John Laurenson looks at the growing interest in nuclear power in Africa, and asks: can it be the answer to the continent’s desperate need for more energy, and will it be safe?
